Sent for Jonathan Mallinson to speak to & told him my uncle would not allow him to sell off [surplus produce, at a profit to himself, from the land he farmed, which was rented from the Listers]. That if he had not cattle enough to consume his produce, he had too much land & my uncle would let it to someone. The man declared he had not sold off any part of the crop of his Yew Trees land but had conserved it all. But at last he owned he had sold off part of the crop of his land at Mitholm. [I] said there would be an end put to this selling-off system with all the tenants & Jonathan promised fair not to sell off without his landlord’s leave, who would not give it without assurance of an equivalent quantity of manure being bought on.
